With our 19 th Annual Beach n’ Boogie Weekend quickly approaching, there is no better way to get fired up and ready than learning about Shag Dancing! Where Did It Originate? | Funny you should ask! Shag Dancing, otherwise known as The “Carolina Shag” was born along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For those of you that do not know, North Myrtle Beach is just right up the road from Ocean Lakes Family Campground. Who? | Lifeguards, waitresses, and other young adults are the ones who are credited with starting the Shag in the Grand Strand. The basic step for this upbeat, quick and smooth dance is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. Anyone can do this dance, whether you are 5 years old or 100 years old! Holy goblins, Bat Sandy! Starfish Heroes are swooping into Ocean Lakes Family Campground to take this year’s Halloweekends to new superhero heights! A Howling Good Time Festival with games and fun stations has joined the usual Halloweekend lineup of trick or treating, costume contests, pumpkin carving competitions and the ever-popular Creepy Site Crawl. The two-hour festival will kick off each Saturday of Halloweekends, transforming our Recreation Center into a Halloween hub with face painting, photo booth, pumpkin ring toss, tattoo station (don’t be scared – they’ll wash off!) and games of chance – guess how many candy corn candies are in the jar and win a prize! The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. during Halloweekend Saturdays (Oct. 14, Oct. 21 and Oct. 28). “If you’re a Halloweekend veteran and didn’t think it could get any more fun – wait ‘til this year,” said Salle Horner, Sandy Harbor Recreation supervisor who organizes the Halloweekend activities. ...

Every year, organizers of Ocean Lakes’ popular Fall Craft Fair faced the same scenario: A long list of crafters craving to participate in the event that quickly sold out. So this year, the 24 th Annual Fall Craft Fair has expanded to two days to give all interested crafters a chance to sell their homemade items. “That way new people could get in,” said Salle Horner, Sandy Harbor and Recreational Activities Coordinator. “We always had so many people on the waiting list to get a booth, but we didn’t have enough spots. Adding a day gives more crafters the chance to participate.” The two-day Craft Fair kicks off Friday, Sept. 23 in our Recreation Center. Hours are 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Guests staying at Ocean Lakes are exclusively allowed to shop during the first three hours each day.
