Boogie Woogie at Beach n’ Boogie
With
our 19th Annual Beach n’ Boogie Weekend quickly approaching, there is
no better way to get fired up and ready than learning about Shag Dancing!
Where Did It Originate? | Funny you should ask! Shag Dancing,
otherwise known as The “Carolina Shag” was born along the coast of the Atlantic
Ocean near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For those of you
that do not know, North Myrtle Beach is just right up the road from Ocean Lakes
Family Campground.
Who? | Lifeguards,
waitresses, and other young adults are the ones who are credited with starting
the Shag in the Grand Strand. The basic step for this upbeat, quick and smooth dance
is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. Anyone can do this
dance, whether you are 5 years old or 100 years old!
Learn To Shag! | Judy Duke will be conducting lessons on
Saturday. She is in the Shag Hall of Fame, Living Legend of Shaggers, National
and Grand National Shagger Judge, and a Pro Dancer. For those of you that have
been shagging on the beach for years, you may recognize her from Fat Harold’s
in North Myrtle Beach, where she teaches every Thursday.
Minute With Mallory | Tune in tomorrow to catch Mallory
dancing the Shag! She will be showing you the basic steps and talking about the
big event this weekend.
