Guests on their personal golf cars now have a safer, more convenient way to travel in and out of the campground. Access trails – one headed south, another headed north – are being added near the Main Entrance to Ocean Lakes for guests driving personal golf cars, riding bikes or jogging in or out of the campground. A new access trail headed south toward Surfside Beach will give Ocean Lakes guests traveling on their personal golf cars a safer, more convenient route entering and leaving the campground. This trail, just off the Main Entrance to Ocean Lakes, connects with the Frontage Road headed toward Surfside Beach. The final tally is in... The raffle for the Harley-Davidson golf car once owned by our co-founder Nelson Jackson brought in $10,000 for a cause dear to our hearts, Marti’s Wish . Greg Bender, (right) manager of Ocean Lakes Golf Cars, presents the $10,000 check to Harry Parnell, Marti's widower.  Marti Parnell was a valued teammate at Ocean Lakes for 35 years who was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer and passed away last year. The money raised through this raffle goes to the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina to bring awareness and possible research of Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma of the stomach.          Thank you for supporting this effort by buying a raffle ticket over the summer. Seymour Port was recently thinking about that raffle ticket he bought in May to help the charity named for longtime friend and Ocean Lakes' teammate, Marti Parnell. As it turns out, he was the winner. Seymour’s ticket was drawn from a mound of raffle tickets Monday afternoon, making him the winner of the custom Harley-Davidson golf car once owned by Ocean Lakes' co-founder Nelson Jackson. The golf car was the prize for a raffle to raise money for Marti’s Wish, which aims to raise awareness and possible research of Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma of the stomach. The effort is named after Marti, a teammate at Ocean Lakes for 36 summers who was diagnosed with the disease and passed away last year. Seymour, who lives in Little River, had known Marti for 20-plus years and was a pallbearer at her funeral. Helping his friend’s cause was his priority when he bought the $5 raffle ticket. Winning? A lot of people have Electric Golf Cars that they use throughout the summer season and into the fall. Most people do not use their golf car in the winter months, they just leave it in their garage or in a storage facility for 3 - 4 months until spring; and then decide to charge it up and use it. By then the golf car will not take a charge because battery voltage has gotten too low. If you are storing your golf car for the winter make sure the water level is filled to the correct capacity and it is fully charged before storing it. Distilled water is recommended to use when watering batteries.  If your golf car has a Tow/Run switch under the seat make sure you place the switch in the “Tow” mode when not using for a period of time (longer than a week).
