Guests on their personal golf cars now have a safer, more convenient way to travel in and out of the campground. Access trails – one headed south, another headed north – are being added near the Main Entrance to Ocean Lakes for guests driving personal golf cars, riding bikes or jogging in or out of the campground. A new access trail headed south toward Surfside Beach will give Ocean Lakes guests traveling on their personal golf cars a safer, more convenient route entering and leaving the campground. This trail, just off the Main Entrance to Ocean Lakes, connects with the Frontage Road headed toward Surfside Beach. We’ve fared well from Tropical Storm Irma. Lots of leaves and limbs scattered throughout the campground, but overall we are in good shape. The recently completed beach renourishment was finished just in time to protect us from this storm. “Thank God we got the renourishment when we did,” Lance Thompson, Ocean Lakes General Manager and Vice President, said while standing on the beach Tuesday morning. “It could have been a lot worse.” There’s still some cleanup to do - mainly from downed leaves and limbs - and our team already has jumped on it. Our camper storage lots look good, no flooding or downed trees. DRAINAGE Our team has cleared outfall drainage pipes of sand the storm had pushed into them to get water flowing freely again. Lakes levels already are dropping, and the ponding around some of the lakes such as Sand Dollar Lake also is clearing. Equipment problems have stalled progress on beach renourishment work this week, delaying its arrival on the beach by Ocean Lakes Family Campground. Crews finished repairing offshore equipment and got sand pumping to the beach again Friday morning after a week of delays. The work is expected to reach the beach by Ocean Lakes on Sunday or Monday, barring any additional mechanical or weather delays. Crews work Friday morning to repair the booster pump used to get sand to the beach for renourishment. Mechanical problems with the boosters have delayed progress up the beach this week. The much-needed beach renourishment work is expected to reach the beach by Ocean Lakes Family Campground this week. Crews work on the renourishment project the week of July 24 north of the pier in Surfside Beach. Crews have been steadily progressing up the beach since starting the $26.3 million sand-pumping project just north of the Surfside Beach Pier in late July. Officials can’t pinpoint an exact day when the work will start by Ocean Lakes because of factors including weather (not only on the beach but out in the ocean where the boosters operate) and potential mechanical issues, which have stopped work at times since Friday.  On Tuesday morning, the blocked-off work area extended to just south of the Holiday Inn Oceanfront at Surfside Beach.
