The Latest and Greatest on the Ocean Lakes Wi-Fi
Time To Reminisce | Last April, we introduced the new campsite Wi-Fi Tiered Access Program, which was to help with the data throughout and allow campers to upgrade their experience, if desired. By requiring campsite guests to log into the Wi-Fi system, it allowed us to restrict the Wi-Fi system in camping areas for usage by our camping guests, which improved throughout by limiting the users able to access the system.
There was some confusion about the main goal of this new program. Guests were upset they were not getting their desired signal strength; however, the upgrade was to initially improve the data speed. Some guests were upset that their signal strength was not improved with these changes, but no changes were made at that time that would have improved coverage.
Let’s Be Clear | In the camping industry, Wi-Fi is a challenge. Signal strength can be affected by the construction material of your RV, inclement weather, trees, and nearby structures. Internet speeds can vary due to the number of guests connected to the wireless network and the amount of data they are using. Streaming movies (especially HD), gaming, and music greatly impact the Wi-Fi experience for all guests.
Let’s Get Real | It is never our mission to “nickel and dime you.” We love our campground, we love our guests, and we love what we do. We strive on a daily basis to provide the ultimate experience for each of you. That means we look for new ways to improve, whether that be with our customer service, our facilities, or our amenities. One area we understand that we need to improve on is the Wi-Fi we offer to our guests; therefore, that is exactly what we are investing in and what we have been working on. This has been an ongoing project that was tackled in phases, and here comes the next phase!
What We Have Been Up To | This winter, Ocean Lakes has been working to upgrade our Wi-Fi infrastructure. For the last few months, we have been replacing DSL with high speed fiber optics in our campsite sections. The process of boring underground to run the conduit is complete. Now, they are pulling the fiber lines into the conduit.
What Is Next | During the next two weeks, camping guests may experience some Wi-Fi interruptions as we complete the last stage of this costly Wi-Fi upgrade. Technicians will remove the current equipment (access points, etc.) and begin connecting the new fiber optic lines to new equipment. There will be Wi-Fi outages as we connect and test equipment (setting ranges and optimizing Wi-Fi coverage). We are testing and optimizing with different camper types onsite. Our team is working as quickly as possible, and please understand weather may impact this process.
The main goal of this phase is to improve Wi-Fi coverage and offer an overall better experience to our guests by installing top tier Wi-Fi Access Points with much better coverage capability and backbone network to support it. This is a big step we are taking on the road to a brighter Wi-Fi future!
Keep In Mind | Our Wi-Fi Tiered Access Program will remain in place. Our goal is and always has been that the Free Tier Wi-Fi Service we offer with your camping reservation will allow you to enjoy any internet-based activity you desire. The upgraded experiences are available for those that desire faster speeds (like you can purchase at your home through your internet service provider). As soon as the new system is finalized, we will publish new guidelines for usage covering any changes to our available services. As always, we will roll out all information making the steps as simple as possible.
Heads Up | This complimentary service is for camping guests and our Annual Lease Sites can obtain service directly through Spectrum.
Until Next Time | We appreciate your patience as we strive to improve our Wi-Fi service and ultimately your guest experience.
